It’s no secret that our skin can tell on us as we rack up those birthdays. I’m talking rough, dry, flaky and damaged skin. Recently I’ve been asked what I do to keep my skin glowing and looking less than my 52 years of age. I was slightly surprised, and flattered, since I’ve had my fair share of troubled skin over the years, including a season of severe acne and a brutal dermabrasion (involving 16 injections and wire brushes removing the top layers of my face) in the days way before laser treatments. I also understand how troubled skin can dramatically impact our self-confidence. It took me years, after my skin had cleared, to feel good about my skin rather than afraid someone was looking at my skin flaws. I must confess I’m always uncomfortable posting close up photos of myself, but my blog is about real life and, for that reason, I do. This last year I’ve experimented with a number of different product lines, purchasing value and travel sets and not full size products, to see what works for me.  I have made a few discoveries along the way.

Heather Lindstrom and Scott Lindstrom New Years Eve 640

New Year’s Eve 2013 with my husband Scott

To get my skin glowing I always start with a clean, fresh face and the Clarisonic Mia  is my go to for getting my skin cleansed and exfoliated each morning in the shower. My skin has never felt smoother and it has the added bonus of  waking me up feeling invigorated for the day. I’m a big believer in facial serums and have used Arbonne for years for the benefits of the pure, botanically-based Swiss skincare line. Recently I’ve mixed it up with Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Serum which I can use day or night. My favorite addition to my skin care routine this last year is facial oil. I know, we are seeing it everywhere, and oils are my best product tip for hydrating and achieving that ‘glowing’ skin. I find that my skin dries out significantly in the winter months and oils are perfect for restoring moisture and glow. My current favorites are Caudalie Divine Oil (discovered in Paris) made of grape, hibiscus and argan oils, and Josie Maran 100 percent Pure Argan Oil Light.  I also like Nude pro-genius oil. Even those with oily skin can use certain types of oils.

After applying serum to my face, I warm a small amount of oil between my fingertips and press along my check bones, above my brow bone, chin area and lightly smooth. The oil actually helps the serum work more effectively by driving the elements deeper into the skin. Applying oil is by far the most luxurious part of my daily routine and adds to that feeling of a little pampering and self-care. You can run a few drops through the ends of your hair for added sheen and texture. There are many brands of facial oil available from high-end like Le Mer to new ones by Loreal that are getting rave reviews.  Even natural food stores carry them. Just be sure your oil does not contain mineral oil or petrolatum, which have a dehydrating effect on skin.

I let the oil settle for a bit and then apply a moisturizer. In my recent experiments I’ve found Ole Henriksen ‘Express the Truth’ for day, Ole Henriksen The Art of Age Control and  Decleor Aroma Night Neroli Essential Night Balm 1 oz. to be very hydrating in the evening. Always remember a sunscreen. This is crucial to avoid damage and sunspots. For foundation I like a touch of luminosity and am currently using Armani Luminous Silk. Finally, a touch of bronzer and I’m out the door. At night I use Neutrogena Cleansing Cloths to clean off traces of makeup. It works well on eye makeup, so I like the dual purpose function. Cleansing skin is important for keeping it healthy.

I can’t emphasize enough how important drinking ample water (I like mine with lemon for a detoxing effect) is to enhance glowing skin as it filters impurities. A green juice, packed with vitamins and minerals, gives a real boost. Though I’m not able to make one every day with my rigorous work schedule, I make time for it on weekends. My favorite recipe is from The Raw Food Detox Diet from Natalia Rose. The green lemonade recipe here.

On a final note, a warm smile, a good night’s sleep, a few moments of sun therapy for Vitamin D (with proper sunscreen), a little ‘romance’, a sparkle of fun, time with family & friends, a hearty laugh and regular movement-be it walking, yoga, pilates, cross-fit, dancing- these all get the blood flowing and enhance the glow of the skin.

With my brother Rod on New Year’s Eve 2013-always fun!

With my 18-year-old niece Rylee last fall.

My advice to keep her skin gorgeous?

Always wear your sunscreen, keep smiling, don’t constantly spray alcohol based

perfume on your neck (that’s another post) and ……..

you are more beautiful than you know.

Do you have any great tips for keeping your skin healthy and glowing?

Please dish!

Heather,
Every time I visit you, it’s a gift!

Your skin is beautiful!

My skin was doing fine until I hit the big 60!

I use a Clarisonic have been using Skinceuticals because we sell the products at our Medispa. I haven’t been to the spa for treatment for over two years. It’s time that I treat myself!

I am going to replace my serums with those that you have suggested and focus on the oils!
You are a dear to share your glow!

Heather your skin looks radiant, whatever you’re doing is definitely working. I’m in a transitional place with my skin, I can’t find a moisturizer that I love. I’ve always had sensitive skin and personally dislike perfume infused products. So thanks for these tips. I shall have to try some of your oils too.

Heather, Wonderful post and I am going to check out these items. You know one of the first things I noticed about you when we met was your gorgeous skin, so it surprises me to learn of your past troubles with it. You have a glow and I love that!
I also like Clarins too. You are right about the oils they can be wonderful. Great idea layering serum, oil and then moisturizer. I’m going to try that! Have a good week Heath.

YOU ARE SO GORGEOUS! And I believe in exfoliating, cleansing from the “inside out” with water, lots of fruits and vegetables and getting exercise and sleep. LOVELY MY FRIEND, and very encouraging; I will be 56 and I’m still glowing – still going strong.

Oh my goodness , you have the most beautiful skin, glowy dewy and no wrinkles – you have great genes. None of my family have great skin, a lot of Kiwis don’t as we have tended to spent way too many hours in the sun. I was the Tanning Queen as a teen. Baby oil slathered all other. The only way I can post photos of myself on my blog is because they are i-photos and then have an Instagram filter on top, bit blurry muddies the wrinkles. I love Clarins too – also love the Clarisonic – do you?

Hi Heather, Great tips and I love your blog!
I use a very natural and simple approach: Right after I get out of the shower, I spray Shea Terra Moraccan Rose Facial Water. After it sets, I use Jason Natural Cosmetics – Vitamin E Creme 25000 Iu during the day. Jason Vitamin E Pure Natural Skin Oil Maximum Strength — 45000 IU overnight (the oil also help makeup come off).

Don’t sleep on your face! Don’t rub your eyes too hard when they are tired or when you are removing or applying makeup. Stay out of the sun!

If only I could go back and tell my 20 year old self to avoid the TANNING SALONS, I’d look so much better! You live, you learn.

Beautiful post Heather!! .. and I love the spritz of perfume;) YES to all things things. Ole H. is a classic and I used to make his skin care products (he wrote a book years back) when I was in my twenties.

Your photos are lovely Heather! Stay with all of those wonderful habits!!

This is such a pretty picture of you with your husband, Heather. I have never had a problem with my skin all these years – I have good genes. My mom’s skin was so nice even when she was 83. These are some lovely tips, and I definitely agree with the exercise and sunshine and laughing. It makes all the difference in the world and lifts our spirits.

You look radiant in these pictures, Heather. Whatever you’re doing, it must be working, cause you look wonderful.

Love,

Thanks for posting Heath! I love the suggestions and already looked up Caudalie on Sephora. Your beautiful glow comes not only from these products tho ~ I know it comes from the inside out too ;-)! You are an amazingly lovely person. I too like the tip about perfume, had no clue! No more neck sprays!

I like the sound of the Caudalie Divine Oil. I can never resist a wander around pharmacies when I’m in France. They have some wonderful beauty products. Decléor is another favourite brand of mine. Your green juice looks so healthy and appetising – I must try the recipe!

I need to print this post and follow it to a T…your skin is positively glowing. Thanks for sharing your tips. Have a fabulous week, Heather! xoxo

Your skin positively glows!! My routine is fairly simple, but I swear by my Clarisonic and love the benefits of Rose Seed Hip oil. I don’y think I drink as much water as I should, so will try to up the quantity.
The no alcohol on your neck tip is so important. I used to always apply my perfume there and had quite a lot of damage before I caught on. Photo facials and light laser treatments were the only fix. Such a wonderful post! Have a great week. xoJennifer

You do have amazing skin I must say!! I love your tips especially the no alcohol on neck. I feel like I neglected my neck even tho I was told and twenty years later there is a huge difference! Can’t wait for that post xx

Fantastic tips, Heather. The Kenwood Spa carries the Caudalie line. I am looking forward to getting a facial there one of these days and trying it out.
I like to add some man-made glow with a highlighter. Stila makes a great one that I apply to my cheek and brow bones after my makeup has been applied. It gives me just the right amount of glow.
